Welcome to the site for the most exquisite South African hand made paper and products.
Phumani means “reach out " in isiZulu.
Reaching out to local communities and transferring skills and innovation is part of Phumani Paper’s mandate. Phumani Paper is the central marketing and sales agent for a wide variety of locally made papers and products.
Phumani Paper works with and supports 17 hand papermaking producer groups in 7 South African provinces. Each producer group hand crafts unique papers using a diverse range of fibres that originate from the different areas. The paper crafters specialize in different agricultural plant species that are specific to their local surroundings e.g. the Free State group produces paper from mielie husks while the Kwa Zulu Natal paper is made with sugar cane waste. Other fibres utilized in the production of paper are banana stem fibres, river reed, ficus and agave sisal. Invasive vegetation such as black wattle, Port-Jackson and blue gum as well as noxious weeds such as milkweed are also utilized. Environmentally friendly production techniques ensure eco-friendly products.
These hand crafted papers are uniquely South African as the fibres utilized in the production of the paper have their own tactile qualities in terms of texture, colour and properties affecting the overall appearance of the finished product. The papers created by the Phumani producer groups have a raw earthy feel that cannot be reproduced in any other country as the paper takes on the colour and feel of the natural vegetation found in South Africa.
The Phumani Paper crafters furthermore utilize these interesting and unique papers to produce innovative products such as customized packaging and conference ranges to fit the style and mood of the conference. The groups also produce corporate gift ranges, cards and stationery and have recently developed a new lifestyle range that transforms paper to a different level thereby adding beauty and innovation through product diversification.
By purchasing Phumani Paper products you will not only satisfy your needs by buying beautiful hand made paper and products but you will also be contributing to job creation and waste reduction.
